It was a foregone conclusion that Final Fantasy XIII would be a success, especially in Square Enix's native Japan. The build up to release had already reached fever pitch when a Playstation 3 demo was issued in Japan, causing a sharp rise in sales of the console. When the actual release came, copies flew off the shelves in Japan in record fashion, surpassing one million units sold in the first twenty-four hours.
This figure takes the total amount of Final Fantasy franchise games sold to over 92 million worldwide since 1987, making it one of the world's most successful gaming series to date. What makes the numbers even more startling was the revelation from Square Enix that the figure did not include copies of the game that were being sold in PS3 bundle packs.
The original forecast of six million worldwide sales now seems to be somewhat conservative and it bodes well for the upcoming year. The game will be released in North America and Europe, for both the Ps3 and Xbox360, on March the 9th and is likely to be met with a similar response from devoted fans.
