Arma 2

What does everyone think about this one? It's been out in Europe for a while I believe, and the demo is available.

I tried the demo, and really liked a lot about the game, but ultimately, the AI bugs really held it back. I understand a few patches have been released, and I'm wondering if they've improved these issues.

So, anyone around here playing it?

oh, whats wrong with the AI then ??
this was one I was gonna try after I finish burnout.
is it really really buggy? cos I just don't have the patience for these things (course I'm not sure my vid card will handle it too well anyway, but..)

Re: Arma 2

I only run the benchmark (same result for 1680x1050 and 1920x1200, bad result of mid thirties) and the game looks...not good. I am talking only about the graphics. It feels just...not a 2009 or 2008 or 2007 game.
I haven't tried to actually play the demo yet.

Re: Arma 2

The AI in the demo was a buzzkill. There were all sorts of quirky bugs, such as guys running into walls and getting stuck, and watching them drive vehicles was pretty funny. Your team members are generally capable, if they aren't running into gun fire for no apparent reason. I think some of this was fixed in patches though.

Other than that, the game seems fun. The world they created is amazing too.

Re: Arma 2

I had issues running the demo then EVGA put out an SLI update which included Arma2 and the game became perfectly smooth at max details. The update works for any brand of nvidia cards. The graphics and sound were excellent from what I saw.

To me, there's no doubt this is a game that you might as well skip for the first six months if you truly want to enjoy it, the patches are coming quickly and eventually it will be fixed enough so that it can be judged on the merits of gameplay rather than bugs.

As for the Arma2 itself, it's the first game since 2000 era Delta Force to bring me out of the arcade style of military shooters and into the world of confusing key assignments and weapon loadouts. I spent the first few games trying to find the enemies since my squad kept killing everything and the rest of the time was either going lone wolf or rolling around in the grass bleeding to death while my AI teammates ran around oblivious to my peril.

Well said. Oddly enough though, the moments of joy I had with the demo were something to remember. Perhaps waiting for the bugs to be fixed is the way to approach this one.

Removing the AI by playing multiplayer may be an option. I've not gotten into that yet.

Anyone else?

Re: Arma 2

At first, the game looked very cool; the huge playground you get, many vehicles and weapons. But I don't like it that much. I still have some bugs and the controls aren't my type (although you can customize them).

They even capped my downloading speed @ 200 kB/s while downloading the demo 5 hours of my life ruined :')

I think this game will get very cheap in a small amount of time, like ARMA (1). Maybe then I will give it a try once more.

Re: Arma 2

I'm gonna give the full game a bit of playing this weekend and hopefully it gets better with the patches available.

Re: Arma 2

Please update this thread as I'm particularly interested in this game.

The makers (BIS) are responsible for an advanced battlespace simulator that is used by the Australian Army (as well as the US Marines, amongst others).

It is basically a grown-up version of Op Flashpoint and it's called VBS1 (Virtual Battle Space, if I recall), although we are now using VBS2.

Both VBS1 & 2 are without a doubt the most realistic battlefield simulators around. Full stop. For squad based scenarios it about as close as any sim or game is ever going to get. Well, for now anyway.

To say that we have found it quite useful before deploying to the MEAO would be a fair statement.

Anyway, I'm discharging from the Army after 15 years of infantry and 11 deployments, and if this games rates then it would be just like I'd never left work. But without the flies, the IED's, the cold, the bloody heat etc. Not to mention getting to actually see my son.

But if it needs time/patches then I'll wait.

cheers
the dog

Re: Arma 2

I'm having trouble getting used to the controls and displays. SOme of the decisions they made are directly in the face of the standard FPS scheme, and why they did so makes very little sense to me as it feels cumbersome and unnatural, not to mention unnecessarily complex. It takes the joy out of controlling a squad.

Re: Arma 2

The ai issues are hopefully gonna get fixed in few patches. What buggers me the most is the engine, it's just too demanding for what it offers.

Considering that the game renders massive land areas as well as all sorts of aerial and ground weapons/enemies I'd say it runs as expected on the highest settings; especially if Arma2 were bug free it would be hard to complain about the demanding specs.
