Star Ocean: The Last Hope (Xbox 360)
I rented the game for three days but it was not enough to beat it. It got me hooked and I rented it for seven more days. It was enough to beat the main story but I found out that the game does not end there.
You can beat the game around level 60 to 70. But after you beat the last boss, it unlocks another boss and an additional very big dungeon. The character level cap at 200 and you can move the cap to 255 if you get 50% of the trophies for a character. The trophies are awarded for completing specific tasks during battle with a character. If you beat the same monster enough times (usually 100 times), you can make a crystal that boost your specs with some specific specs given by that monster. It's an incentive to level up in each area of the game. If you really want to get all the monsters at 100%, you'll have to do it when you first see each monster in the game because there are some areas where you can't return at the end. The last bosses were long to beat. You had to fight four bosses without saving in between (but you could go in your inventory to replenish your hp and mp). The last of those four bosses was really long to beat. It took between 10 to 20 of my most powerful special attacks to kill it. It probably took about half an hour to beat. The annoying thing is that you don't see the health of the bosses so you never know if you are close to beating them. The thing I just love about the game is that you have eight characters at the end, you fight with four and you can swap the characters at any time during battle, even when they are down. That means that if a character dies, you can decide to replace it by another one instead of restoring his life. It's strategic decisions like that that can save you in difficult situations where you don't have the time to cast the life restoration spell. I liked the combat system that's in realtime. It's the first game I play that works like that. Near the end, when you get the more powerfull spells, it can get crazy on screen with all the spell animations at the same time. It even slows down the game but I did not mind because it's fun. You can build your own combos. You have to figure out an order that gives you an edge in combat. For example, there's a character that can do a black hole attack. It attracts monsters toward a central point while doing damage. It's not the most powerful spell but since it attracts monsters in a single spot, it's very strong because you can have another character attack all the monsters at the same time since they get close to each other. The slow downs happen in situations like that, when you have multiple characters attacking many monsters all at the same time. The story and the cinematics were good. The main character is interesting. He's a real good guy. There are some really interesting plot twists in the game. I like a good story and the game delivered. If you like rpg, I recommend the game. |
