Game Recommendations
I’d like some recommendations for a new game – new to me, at least.
Here are the relevant and not-so-relevant facts: I’ve never been more than a casual gamer, but now I am completely out-of-touch with the gaming industry and any games released in the past 6-8 years. An eternity, I know. The last games I played were circa 2000-2002 – then grad school, work, and family took precedence and my casual gaming fell into nonexistence. So, a game that was released in 2004 might fit the bill as well as - or better than - one released in 2009. The last games I played regularly back-in-the-day were Deus Ex, and the Thief series. I really enjoyed these games, especially the Thief series and would like recommendations for a similar type of 1st person sneaker. I also really enjoyed my Atari Pong machine, Mattel Electronics Football, and The Bard’s Tale and Dungeon Master on my Amiga, but wouldn’t necessarily suggest that you factor those into your recs! Platform: PC Specs: 17” notebook (1680x1050) Vista(x64) - SP2 Core2Duo P8400 2.26GHz 4GB DDR2 9600M GT (512MB) I realize this is limited information, and I appreciate any suggestions to get me pointed in the right direction. Primarily, I am interested in a game that is similar to/reminiscent of the Thief series and/or Deus Ex. Thanks in advance! |

Re: Game Recommendations
Have you played any of the Splinter Cell games? They might be up your alley. If you are into the SciFi RPG sort of stuff, Mass Effect is truely great.
While not necessarily perfectly similar to those two games, a few modern gaming staples you might enjoy are Bioshock and Call of Duty 4. Both are excellent, no matter what your gaming past was.

Re: Game Recommendations
I don't envy you. Unless you have lots of free time, there are so many good games...
Assassins' Creed is a more action oriented version of Thief, played in third person. Fallout 3, is like the previous fallout games only from the first person perspective, with an option to pause combat. The Splinter Cell series of games are like Thielf only that you are a secret agent and trying to achieve appropriate goals. Very limited shooting since you have to be very stealthy. Oblivion, is an RPG game, first person, medieval fantasy setting. All of the above games are AAA titles that any gamer should play, at least one that likes RPGs and Thief.

Re: Game Recommendations
Also look at Bioshock, and it's upcoming sequel, Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl.
Speaking of 2004, if you can find it, look for Thief: Deadly Shadows which came out that year. |

Re: Game Recommendations
got to agree on Mass effect. great game if you're a little in sci-fi and a fan of story driven games. voice acting is great in that one.

Re: Game Recommendations
Half Life games are also great. And you might enjoy the Splinter Cell games, or even the Hitman series. COD4 is certainly a superb game too.

Re: Game Recommendations
Like Lepel said, the Half Life 2 series of games would be good. ESPECIALLY if you add the FAKEFACTORY mod. That mod really changes the visuals and 'feel' of the game.

Re: Game Recommendations
Based upon your specs I recommend these games which are some of the best of the past decade and will run beautifully on your laptop:
Half Life 2 and Episodes 1,2 and Lost Coast (2004) Mafia (2002) Based upon the genre you like I would recommend these games: Splinter Cell, Splinter Cell 2:Pandora Tomorrow, Splinter Cell 3: Chaos Theory, Fallout 3, Mass Effect, Oblivion, Hitman: Blood Money

Re: Game Recommendations
I want to thank (again) everyone who made recs for me. Based on your recs, I decided on Mass Effect. It was the right decision!
I enjoyed it enough that I am playing through again on Hardcore difficulty with my level 50-something Bastion/Adept. It took about 50 hours to play through the first time, but I completed every assignment (I think) and hit level 50. In my 2nd play through, I'll limit the number of assignments I complete, especially the "search & find" assignments. Defintiely will be saving my initial character for ME2 when it comes out next year. As I continue to play ME, I'm thinking about my next purchase. There are quite a few good recs above, and I may pick one of those - probably BioShock/Oblivion combo pack or Assassin's Creed. However, two other titles pique my interest: Jade Empire and The Witcher. Anyone willing to give their thoughts, impressions, and insights on those two games? Thanks! |

Re: Game Recommendations
I have Jade Empire, but I haven't spend much time with it. It's more light than the The Witcher and smaller in all ways. If you want something long and deep, get the The Witcher instead of Jade Empire.
